Our top 5 ‘Working Definitions’ of 2021

By

Almost three years ago MIT Sloan launched “Working Definitions,” a weekly Instagram series exploring words and phrases that define emerging management ideas. The annual roundup of the most popular terms serves as a bellwether of readers’ concerns and interests.

In 2019 the most popular definitions addressed innovation and potential. Last year they centered around decision-making and leadership, as everyone struggled to adjust to the professional and personal upheavals caused by the pandemic.

This year’s most popular terms reflect an appreciation for working together, whether it’s the connection between proximity and productivity or the nontechnical skills needed to thrive in today’s environment. There’s also a renewed appreciation for authenticity, and not letting any data or resource go to waste.

Here’s a closer look at 2021’s most popular terms.
