Tallying a decade of global entrepreneurship
By
More than 200 fellows; 10 years; 1 goal — a “launching pad” for innovative thinking around developing markets.
For the Legatum Center for Development and Entrepreneurship, this year marks a decade as a place for “advancing economic and social progress in the developing world,” according to the center’s 10-year impact report [PDF].
The Legatum Center provides educational and financial resources for students looking to build businesses and create jobs in developing areas of the world.
“When equipped with a strong sense of purpose, a principled mindset, and the will to innovate, entrepreneurs have the power to create good jobs, improve lives, transform systems, and build a better world,” said Legatum executive director Georgina Flatter, and faculty director Fiona Murray in a statement. “Over the next 10 years we’ll continue inspiring and serving principled entrepreneurial leaders across the developing world.”
Legatum fellows have created nearly 15,000 jobs and raised $79 million in emerging markets, according to the report. Today, 64 active fellows are working around the world, nearly all of them in developing markets.
Of 13 industries in which those active fellows are working, the most common areas are:
- IT/telecom
- financial services
- health care
- professional services
- energy/utilities
