	Course Overview Persistent disparities in access to homeownership raise the question of what new policies and practices in housing finance can advance social equity goals. Truly advancing equity in housing finance requires rethinking our current, complex housing finance system and raising foundational questions about how risk is understood, managed, and priced; how the housing finance system is structured and regulated; and how challenges related to climate change and resilience can be recognized and addressed. 	Course Overview This special seminar for professional development changes annually. In Spring 2015, this course supplemented the rigorous technical training of the MFin curriculum with an overview of the structure of financial regulation, an introduction to regulatory enforcement, and a primer on regulatory compliance, as well as a summary of the best practices, policies and procedures, and a discussion about the core values and professional conduct in the financial services industry. 15.S16	Financial Regulation: From banks, non-banks and markets to cryptocurrency, stable coins, and digital currencies	Spring	6 Cr.
	Course Overview The course explores what problems financial regulation is intended to resolve. With a focus on the fragility of highly regulated bank and non-bank financial intermediaries, it then considers how despite deep capital markets and substantial financial regulation in the United States, global markets nearly collapsed during the Great Financial Crisis (GFC) of 2007-2008. Next it investigates the near collapse of credit markets during the 2020 pandemic. The course concludes by considering mostly unregulated or lightly regulated digital markets, and debate what regulations are appropriate for stable coins, cryptocurrencies and digital currencies. MITx	Financial Regulation: From the Global Financial Crisis to Fintech and the COVID Pandemic	Fall	0 Cr.
	Course Overview This course will provide the underpinning rationale for financial regulation and evaluate the post-Global Financial Crisis reforms in this light, noting adaptions that were required due to systemic nature of the crisis and the need to ensure private sector compliance. It then applies these rationales and lessons learned to current topics in Fintech and the response to the Covid-19 pandemic. The objectives of this course are to: Identify the goals of financial regulation and understand the conditions under which regulation would make the financial system safer and more efficient and when it could be counterproductive. Identify the precursors and vulnerabilities that give rise to financial crisis, including historical contexts, technological developments, and private sector responses to previous regulation. Understand the main tools currently in use to mitigate stand-alone risks in individual financial institutions as well as stability risks to the financial system as a whole and evaluate their effectiveness, noting unintended consequences. Apply the basic rationales and goals for regulation to technological financial innovations (e.g., fintech) and how the post-2008 reforms have influenced the ongoing responses to the financial implications of the COVID pandemic.
