The Miriam Pozen Prize was presented to Dr. Mario Draghi in recognition of his leadership in international financial policy on June 7, 2023 at MIT’s Samberg Conference Center to a standing-room-only crowd.

Introducing the event were Dean David Schmittlein (John C Head III Dean and Professor of Marketing at MIT Sloan) and Professor Deborah Lucas (Sloan Distinguished Professor of Finance at MIT Sloan and Director of the MIT GCFP) [watch here at 00:48], followed by the presentation of the award by Bob Pozen (MIT Sloan Senior Lecturer and former former President of Fidelity Investments) [watch here at 08:40].

Professor James Poterba
(Mitsui Professor of Economics at MIT and President at NBER) then summarized Dr. Draghi’s many contributions to financial policy that earned him the nickname “Super Mario” [watch here at 13:00], after which Dr. Draghi gave the Miriam Pozen Prize address.

The address reflected “on the two events that, together with the ever increasing tensions with China, have dominated international relations and the global economy over the last year and a half: the war in Ukraine and the return of inflation." [watch here at 31:00; read here).

Announcement

The MIT GCFP announced that Mario Draghi has been named the winner of the Miriam Pozen Prize in recognition of his leadership in international financial policy. Draghi, a longtime academic economist and public servant, served as prime minister of Italy until October 2022, and previously served as president of the European Central Bank, the institution responsible for the management of the euro and European Union monetary policy. Draghi earned his PhD in economics from MIT. An award ceremony will be held at the MIT Sloan School of Management on June 7, 2023, during which time the former prime minister will deliver the Miriam Pozen address. More details to come. About the Award
The Miriam Pozen Prize recognizes outstanding research or practice in financial policy by an academic or practitioner. It is awarded under the aegis of the MIT Golub Center for Finance and Policy (GCFP) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Awarded biennially, the prize supports the improved evaluation and management of government financial institutions, regulation of financial markets and institutions, and measurement and management of risk. 

In establishing the Miriam Pozen Prize, the GCFP hopes to contribute to the improved evaluation and management of government financial institutions, regulation of financial markets and institutions and measurement and management of risk.
