4 researchers join MIT Sloan faculty

By

With research ranging from new methods of analyzing firm behavior to optimal decision methods for large-scale renewable energy integration, here are this year’s four new MIT Sloan faculty members.

 Assistant Professor of Applied Economics

Comes from: Demirer was most recently a postdoctoral researcher at Microsoft Research New England. He earned a PhD in economics from MIT in 2020.

Research: Demirer studies industrial organization with a focus on developing new methods to analyze firm behavior, productivity, and market power. He also conducts research on machine learning for causal inference. This work investigates how to incorporate machine learning tools into econometrics to identify causal effects in economic research.

Assistant Professor of Operations Management

Comes from: Lykouris joins MIT Sloan from Microsoft Research in New York City, where he was a postdoctoral researcher in the machine learning group. He earned a PhD in computer science from Cornell University in 2019.

Research: Lykouris studies data-driven sequential decision-making. His work covers machine learning, optimization, stochastic models, and revenue management.

Assistant Professor of Work and Organization Studies

Comes from: Stansbury earned a PhD in economics from Harvard University this year and was a scholar in Harvard’s Inequality and Social Policy program. She is a nonresident senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics.

Research: Stansbury’s research focuses on topics in labor and macroeconomics, particularly on issues to do with inequality, power, and institutions in the labor market. In recent work, she has studied the extent of employer concentration in the U.S. labor market, the macroeconomic effects of the decline of worker power in the U.S., and the incentives for minimum wage non-compliance in the U.S. and the U.K.

Watch Stansbury’s January 2021 talk, “To tackle inequality, (re)Build worker power.”

Associate Professor of Operations Research and Statistics

Comes from: Sun will join MIT Sloan in January 2022. He is currently an associate professor at H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Georgia Tech. He earned a PhD in operations management from MIT Sloan in 2011.

Research: Sun’s research focuses on developing optimal decision methods to facilitate large-scale renewable energy integration in electric power systems. He also studies the joint planning and operations of power grids and other infrastructure, such as electrified transportation systems, alternative fuel systems, and battery supply chains.
