We asked several MIT experts about their latest projects and what they see as the most exciting—and concerning—aspects of the AI boom.

Swati Gupta, Associate Professor of Operations Research and Statistics

explores machine learning and optimization to improve the efficiency, quality, and fairness of the decisions models make.

How would you describe your work in the artificial intelligence space?

I work across applications from hiring, admissions, health care, energy, and logistics to law and policy to understand industry-specific nuances and incorporate them into the design of systems.

What is the biggest opportunity in working with AI?

Humans are biased, and so is our data. But our algorithms can be designed with caution, so they are auditable, accountable, and hopefully less biased.

What do you see as the biggest challenges or areas for caution?

Explainability, which is making the decision-making process of artificial intelligence systems understandable to human beings, fake data and news, and bias in decisions, especially in important areas.
