Barbara Dyer, senior lecturer, is one of several faculty members at MIT Sloan who have won the 2019 Ideas Worth Teaching Award from The Aspen Institute’s Business & Society Program. The other MIT Sloan winners are Leigh Hafrey, Christine Kelly, and Thomas Kochan. This award recognizes 10 exceptional courses, and honors faculty who are redefining business education, providing learning experiences that equip managers of tomorrow with the context, skills, and decision-making capabilities needed to lead in an increasingly complex business environment and world. The award celebrates innovative teaching that challenges conventional thinking and tests new approaches to divisive issues, rethinking the path forward for business and society and preparing students to make business decisions that create both financial and social value.

The winning course, 15.S02 “Bridging the American Divides: Work Community and Culture —USA Lab,” is MIT Sloan’s U.S.-focused Action Learning Lab, developed by the Good Companies, Good Jobs Initiative at MIT Sloan in partnership with the MIT Mens et Manus America Initiative and MIT Sloan Action Learning.

Valerie Karplus has won the 2019 U.S. Clean Energy Education and Empowerment (C3E) Education Award, recognizing her outstanding teaching and research-advising contributions in the clean energy domain. This annual award is one of eight in different disciplines of clean energy leadership (research, entrepreneurship, law and finance, business, government, international, advocacy, and education) that honor mid-career women who have demonstrated outstanding leadership and achievement in advancing and implementing clean and innovative energy solutions.  The awards are administered by the Texas A&M Energy Institute, the MIT Energy Initiative (MITEI), and the Stanford Precourt Institute for Energy, who collaborate with the U.S. Department of Energy to implement the U.S. C3E Initiative, which aims to close the gender gap and increase the participation, leadership, and success of women in clean energy fields. 

John Van Reenen has won the 25^th Annual Research Award from the National Institute for Health Care Management (NIHCM) Foundation, which supports innovative research with the potential to inform improvements to the U.S. health care system. The NIHCM Research Award recognizes outstanding publications which further innovation in health care financing, delivery, and organization or the implementation of health care policy.

Van Reenen’s winning paper, co-authored with Zack Cooper (Yale University), Stuart V. Craig (University of Pennsylvania), and Martin Gaynor (Carnegie Mellon University), is entitled, “The Price Ain’t Right? Hospital Prices and Health Spending on the Privately Insured” (The Quarterly Journal of Economics, 134 (1), February 2019, 51-107). The independent panel of experts who selected the winners “were impressed with the national reach of this work and its impact in transforming perceptions and raising public policy questions regarding antitrust enforcement.” 

The award was announced April 11, 2019.

In 2016, Van Reenen was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for “For services to Economics and Public Policy Making”.

In 2009, Van Reenen won the Yrjö Jahnsson Award, awarded to best economist under the age of 45 “who has made a contribution that is significant to economics in Europe”. The prize is the most prestigious award in European economics: it is the European equivalent to the US Bates Clark Medal.

In 2011, Van Reenen was presented with the Arrow Prize (IHEA) for world’s best paper in health economics in 2010.

John Van Reenen has won the 2017 HBR McKinsey Award, which recognizes “practical and groundbreaking management thinking” in selecting the best Harvard Business Review article of the year. Van Reenen’s winning paper, co-authored with Raffaella Sadun (Harvard Business School) and Nicholas Bloom (Stanford University), is entitled, “Why Do We Undervalue Competent Management?” (Harvard Business Review, September-October 2017, 120-127).

The award was announced recently and appears in the May-June issue of Harvard Business Review.

In 2014, Van Reenen was awarded the European Investment Bank Prize for Excellence in Economic and Social Research. 

Kate’s book, Challenging Operations: Medical Reform and Resistance in Surgery, University of Chicago Press, 2011, is the winner of the Max Weber Award from the Organizations, Occupations, and Work section and the winner of the Sociology of Law Biannual Distinguished Book Award from the Law section of the American Sociological Association.

Sinan Aral and Simon Johnson were each awarded the 2017 Jamieson Prize for Excellence in Teaching, established to honor educational innovation and excellence. The Jamieson Prize for Excellence in Teaching Award is the most prestigious teaching prize offered by the School. The award was established in 2006 and is awarded each year to two MIT Sloan faculty members, as well as two electrical engineering and computer science faculty members, for their contributions to educational excellence at MIT.
